We have changed our Art III and IV to Honors Art III and Honors Art IV. This will add weight to their GPA which means the course includes more rigor. Due dates, involvement in ones own interests, exploration, and hours of work will be strictly monitored. Students will explore critical characteristics of creative thinking. They should seek out creative problems that are interesting and challenging, set goals, make informed decision, and use problem-solving skills to pursue their own artistic interest. They are responsible for demonstrating mastery in using the elements of art to organize the principles of design in their artwork, as well as developing mastery in concept, composition and the execution of drawing. Students must research their ideas for their projects and document this in their sketchbook. Assignments will include the artistic ideation process, reading, and research including at least 2 essays. Students are expected to have sketchbooks at all times. Both teacher and student directed work should be part of the contents of the sketchbook. Sketchbooks will be used to document the mandatory ideation for in and out of class projects. Students should use their sketchbook daily. The more mark making experimentation, ideation, reading, and research the student does in the sketchbook will produce a “snowball effect” and inspire more and more ideas.
Attendance and immediate engagement in the studio is imperative. Due dates must be met on in class assignments. Homework will be necessary. Critique dates will be set with each assignment. Students will be expected to have projects “critique ready” at the beginning of class on the set day. Critiques with peers and instructor are mandatory. All students must participate by giving a brief description of their art work. They are expected to engage in both verbal and written critiques of their own work and the work of their peers. These critiques will require the students to use the vocabulary of art to discuss the art works.
